Kickstarter!!! by cardtorial Posted on August 23, '12

Hi all!

Just to warn you, this is going to be one of MANY posts on Cardtorial's kickstarter!

I've been tossing around the idea of doing a kickstarter campaign for months now, I think I wanted to do it as early as February or March!  Now is the time I'm finally making it happen.  I've set a date of August 27th and it still feels like it's coming up too soon.

What is Kickstarter?

"Kickstarter is the world's largest funding platform for creative projects. Every week, tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds ofmusic, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields."

"On Kickstarter, a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands."

Why am I doing a kickstarter?

Well...I want to buy my own laser!!  More precise details of the kickstarter will be forthcoming.  Essentially, in exchange for backer support, I'll be sending out sweet Cardtorial card packages. :)

I'm working on so many exciting things in advance of the launch in a couple weeks (is that enough time to get all my ducks in a row? who knows...but nothing like a deadline to motivate me to get shit done).  I'm working on getting press kit, photos, video, lookbook, new website (and more!) together before the launch.  I'm so excited.  And nervous!  I really hope we can all make it happen. :)

I'm also going to work on getting the word out!  Friend us on facebook , check back often, sign up for the mailing list, and let me know if you're interested in doing more.  I'll try to post teasers for y'all.

Selina's Birthday! by cardtorial Posted on August 23, '12

Hi all!

Been a while since my last post. Lots of updates that I've been doing a less than stellar job of keeping up to date on. I think the task of recapping seemed daunting so I'm simply avoided it. Going to start fresh, with today!

Last January I began tutoring a girl through the YMCA. Her name is Selina. She's on summer break and will be starting 4th grade next week. I remember when I first met her, I could barely get her to utter a word. Oh, how things have changed -- sometimes I'm amazed at how chatty this once silent child can be. Oh. And she definitely doesn't hold back when it comes to asking me personal questions. Today's hot question was -- 'When are you getting married?' and 'Are you inviting me to your wedding?' She must know something I don't. Today was Selina's birthday so it was a perfect excuse for a fun outing!

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="511"]Image Selina (left) and Tina, her younger sister (right)[/caption]

We walked from their home to the ferry building (not a short walk!) where we were headed for some grub.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="1013"]Image Tina holding a delicious-looking heirloom tomato. They picked up about 5 of these and each time asked me if it was a tomato (I guess they can be odd-looking).[/caption]

They had some wagon wheel from Cowgirl Creamery (they totally loved it), picked up some Delica, grabbed a shake and fries from Gott's before picking up yogurt and heading to the library. And of course, what kind of birthday would it be without a card.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="1013"]Image Grubbin' at Gott's![/caption]

They had so much fun they're already planning my birthday outing for October (and Tina's in January). :P

To visit this blog post in its full newsletter glory (pictures and all, visit us here! http://us4.campaign-archive1.com/?u=5437358da388d74a27acd5c37&id=03314692da&e=3b1e91d2e1)

Hi all!

Cardtorial is having it's first online sale today withSneakPeeq.  They've encouraged me to be social and share it with all my friends. The sale went live at 10am Friday.

If you happen to be roaming around facebook this morning (which I hope you are) and would like to "peek" it (as they say), that would be great. SneakPeeq is one of the up and coming social e-commerce sites.  One of the sales reps found me at UniqueLA.  I'm so eager to test out this market. They'll also give me facebook and twitter posts so it'll be an active Cardtorial day -- hopefully one of many more to come! ;)
(one downside. you have to sign in to your fb so people can see it)

UniqueLA Debrief
It seems like such a long time ago but last time I had emailed y'all was to tell you about my first show!  I'm happy to say Cardtorial was well-received by bloggers, fellow crafters, and most importantly, the customers!  With 350 crafters on one floor, the event did not lack things to look at.  Some might even describe it as entirely overwhelming.  It was awesome to see all the "legit" vendors.  It offered me some great inspiration for future shows!  People went nuts for the business cards (I was practically cleaned out).  Bottom line, I'm going to continue to look for interesting shows to do and am hoping to move into wholesale / trade shows (eventually).

Thank you to everybody for stopping by (and dragging your significant others)!  Specifically, Seyou & Saam, Gully & Gabe, Dara, Jeff & Jen, Brandon, Garrett, and BY's mama.  Special shout-out to my dad, BY, and most especially my mama.  This crew helped me set up, clean up, and even held down the fort while I ran off to the airport.  My mom actually manned the booth herself for a good couple hours (imagine Mama Leung selling these wood cards -- kind of funny if you know my mom).

Happy happy June.  See you all soon!

Hello everyone  (:

A short post from me, Elice.  We were in Chicago this past weekend for our oldest sister's graduation from business school and Father's Day.  Here is a photo of the family (I'm on the right).  I think we look nice!

Back in San Francisco, Yvonne is busy packaging as I type!  She's planning new designs and projects for you all to look forward to.

Some of my loot! The name card looks really lovely.  Maybe they'll be available soon?

Hi all!

As many of you heard, Unique LA was last week (Mother's Day weekend) and Cardtorial made its in-person crafting debut.  I'm happy to report the show was a total hit!  We met some fellow crafters, a number of interesting (and interested) bloggers, and last but not least, so many enthusiastic shoppers!

The show definitely wouldn't have been as enjoyable (or successful) if not for my wonderful friends & family.  Without you, there would have been no bathroom breaks, food to eat, or comforting familiar faces.  Thank you for helping me through the weekend.  I actually had to duck out early for a flight (to Australia!) on Sunday afternoon.  I want to offer my mama a huge thank you for manning the Cardtorial booth. She was definitely out of her element but managed beautifully. :P

Lessons learned:

-- People LOVED loved the business cards.  I have to admit, they're lookin' pretty spiffy!

-- Definitely need a more sturdy table display.  My wobbly cake stands probably are probably not going to make the cut for future shows.  People create practical displays for a reason.

-- Square is awesome so long as you have robust wireless.

-- Great data points on which cards were popular, how much inventory to make, basic dynamics of a show.

I'll post more pictures in the coming week.  They're currently trapped on my digital camera.

Cardtorial is now in stores!

How exciting.

Timeless Treasures, a Pac Heights neighborhood gem (think Anthropologie meets whimsical, cozy vintage shop), has just begun to carry Cardtorial cards.  Joan, the wonderful owner of Timeless Treasures, takes such great care in curating and presenting the goods in her store.  They have a whopping 5 stars on yelp (http://www.yelp.com/biz/timeless-treasures-san-francisco). We really couldn't think of a better store to launch in!

How it went down:

I had been putting off talking to stores for a number of weeks because I didn't feel quite ready.  I had been thinking about it but I needed make my website, prepare my look book,  figure out what to say, where to go, etc.  It was such an intimidating task, I kept on finding reasons to wait another week.  And so the weeks passed.

With Mother's Day fast approaching and a stack of Mother's Day cards staring me down from the corners of my room, I finally decided it was time to get up and go.  When I arrived at Timeless Treasures, I awkwardly lurked around the store.  It really was awkward lurking; I felt like I was canvassing again. At first, I was greeted with complete skepticism when I told the employee I was a local San Franciscan designing greeting cards.  But after whipping out my handy dandy (and somewhat bootleg) sample binder, she completely came around.  Hooray!!  While the store owner was the ultimate decision-maker, this was a step in the right direction

The next day, I got a voicemail from Joan (the owner).  I wish I could embed voicemail here.  Listening to it made me so happy.  I wanted to forward it to anybody. Everybody!  I just wanted somebody to share in the excitement with me. She thought the cards were very special and left such an enthusiastic message.  It's one thing hearing compliments from your friends.  Another to hear it from strangers.  And yet another to hear it from a successful store owner that has an eye for curating things that people love. Woot!  After productive conversations, logistics, and crafting, Cardtorial cards are officially in store. :)

The Mother's Day cards were featured in the most recent store newsletter!  You should definitely stop by Timeless Treasures to see what wonderful things they have up their sleeves (and to see our goods, of course).

Below is the newsletter clip.  Our first "official" shout-out.

Good morning on what looks to be the start of a "typical" April day here in San Francisco. . . breezy and showery to start, and then, if we're as lucky as yesterday, a gorgeous few hours in the afternoon.

With Mother's Day just a little more than 2 weeks off (Sun., May 13), we've stocked up on cards and gifts for you to honor and celebrate your mom, as well as to show gratitude to any woman who has been "like a mom" to you over the years.

And we aren't ignoring your desire for a unique gift for your best pal who will celebrate a birthday soon, or something to add pizazz to your placeas you make some changes before summer starts.

Cards that'll have Mom bragging about your thoughtfulness
Let's face it. Now that most communication comes down to email or texting, a greeting card that arrives in the mail or accompanies a hand-delivered package is among life's finest little pleasures.
At Timeless Treasures we are simply wild about distinctive, high quality cards. We take great joy in coming up with new, imaginative designs that will delight you, as well as your friends and family.
Just in time for Mother's Day, we discovered the marvelous talent of Yvonne Leung, a San Francisco artisan who produces fun, unique cards made of wood.
*Her styles that mimic the format of an eyesight test chart (below, left) are especially clever and charming.
*Smitten with elephants or giraffes or chickens? Come and check out Yvonne's mama-and-offspring designs.  Shown below, right, are her elephants.

Timeless Treasures is open Monday - Saturday from 11:00 to 6:00 and on Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00.  We hope you'll stop by and see what we've got in store for you now.

Happy weekend!

Voila!  I've gone through many versions and (while not quite perfect), this should do the trick for now.

Hope you enjoy flipping through the lookbook (computer / ipad friendly).  I really do appreciate feedback so feel free to leave comments, or e-mail me directly (yvonne@cardtorial.com).

Leave a comment Unique LA Spring Show by cardtorial Posted on August 23, '12

Hi all!

Last week I found out I made the cut for the Unique LA Spring Show! Yippeee!

Unique is the largest independent design show in the country featuring over 325 hand-selected designers and artists. I'm totally loving the vibe of the event (well-curated design + artist community + free booze + photobooths + sunny LA = !!!).  The show / organization's mission is to bring local-made design and art to the masses.   To get a feel for products you'll find at the event, check out their past lookbooks!

Here's the link to the website and the event flyer below!

The event is from 11-6pm on both Saturday / Sunday of Mother's Day weekend.  It would be a great opportunity to bring your mama to see some very neat goods!  Also, if you have any interest in helping to man the Cardtorial booth, let me know!  Can't wait to see your smiling faces at Unique LA. :)

I've been working on a book / presentation in preparation for talking to store owners.  I'll have to make some adjustments (font is too small.  I was expecting to be able to utilize a single page view).

Regardless, here's a sneak peek!
